Michigan 2003

Here is the daily log of our trip to Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Saturday 8-9-03

We just ate dinner and everyone has had a bath and in pj's.  Grandpa is getting ready to set up a game of Rummycube.  This is a view on one of the rooms in Perry and Nancy room.

Emily says "Hi".  Grandma got kicked out to the deck to smoke...I think we locked her out (in background).

SUNDAY 8-10-03

Patton and Emily wading out to deep water....heck of an undertow today...

The kids on the way to the beach, there is a long canal next to our hotel that the boats travel on to get out to lake Michigan.

In the town of Charlevoix they have painted fish all over the place, just like we have "cows" all over the Plaza.  Here the kids are hanging on a fish next the docks.

We finally had to shut Preston up and get him some "blue moon" ice cream.  Michigan is one of the few places to have this flavor.

Walking the streets of downtown Charlevoix.

The kids in the pool at the hotel....weather is great today!

Monday 8-11-03

Weather was kind of crummy, overcast and in the low 70's.  The kids just hung around and watched TV, we went to the movies in the PM and then went out for ice cream.

But...........the fishing was interesting!

We took a boat out in the early AM and man the seas were rough.  Rolling 3-4' swells tested our ability to hold down our breakfast.  Perry was about to start chumming over the side but he managed to get it under control...kinda, he was pale.

After a few hours of trolling our spinners from 80-50' the Salmon started hitting.  I was able to bring in this 18lb beauty without snapping the line or my arm...whew what a rush.  The other guy in the picture is "Ben", he was the ships mate that made sure we didn't screw things up.

Below is Perry bringing in the days catch...a nice king Salmon at 18.5 lbs.  Ben is setting the drag as this big fish was taking line and going for deep water.

Wednesday 8-13-03

Stayed in a nice beachfront hotel in Mackinac City.  We took a ferry over to the island and saw all the sights.

Above...Riding the ferry from the mainland to the island.  Contrary to what appears, the boat is not having engine failure...it has this huge hydro-spout that creates a rooster tail, very cool.

Once on the island we walked around the streets, very colonial.  No cars allowed, only bikes and horses.  It is one of the most beautiful places to see.

We took a carriage tour of the island and stopped at a high lookout.  Emily and Peri are looking through binoculars.  You can see forever....

We eat here every time we come. It is a local restaurant called "Darrows"...best white fish you will ever eat.

Here is a view out the balcony of the hotel room.  It overlooks a nice beach that the kids swim in.

We swam after dinner tonight, water was a bit chilly, but not to bad.
